VVD for Radio

Radio stations around the world are discovering that adding video to their broadcasts isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s essential for growing audiences beyond the dial. VVD was born in radio, and it remains the easiest way to simulcast your shows to YouTube, Facebook, and beyond without hiring a single extra crew member.

The Origin Story

VVD was created at Arrow FM, a community radio station in New Zealand that wanted to add video to their live shows but had zero budget for a camera operator. The solution? Software that listens to the audio feeds from the broadcast console and switches cameras automatically as presenters speak. What started as a simple experiment became a product now used by stations worldwide, including Houston Public Media and their Hello Houston show.

How VVD Works for Radio

The setup is straightforward and integrates directly with your existing broadcast infrastructure:

  1. Audio Split from Broadcast Console — Take a split of each microphone channel from your broadcast console. VVD supports Dante (via Dante Virtual Soundcard), Wheatstone (via WheatNet-IP driver or SLIO hardware), and standard ASIO audio interfaces.
  2. Feed into VVD — VVD continuously analyses the audio levels on every channel and uses voice activity detection to determine who is speaking at any given moment.
  3. Automatic Camera Switching — VVD sends commands to your video switcher — ATEM, vMix, or TriCaster — to cut to the camera assigned to the active speaker. Split-screen compositions engage automatically when multiple people speak simultaneously.

No operator, no intervention, no extra staff. Set it up once, and every show is automatically switched.
